The media industry provides a lot of opportunities and space for creativity. For Sonia, she believes her passion has always been in the media.
Sonia was initially interested in Broadcast Journalism, but after entering Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Media and Mass Communications, her interest shifted to Radio.
Sonia’s change in interest was also due to the fact that Ngee Ann had given her a lot of opportunities to explore different sectors of the media.
She is currently a part time radio deejay and has had opportunities to host for school events as well. She has done interviews for celebrities such as Gurmit Singh and Hossan Leong.
Her most nerve wrecking interview? “Hossan Leong on broadcast. Interviewing someone like Hossan Leong made me nervous and because it was 'live' and I had to ensure that I did not slip up”
“I enjoy Radio because it is not as stressful as hosting. You get to plan your schedule beforehand whereas for hosting, a lot of on the spot thinking of what to say needs to be done.”
When asked about school a regular school day, she mentions the work load and the way others perceive her course to be very political.
“I think when all of us joined the course we tried to change the mindset of others who thought we were all very political. But what matters most is focusing on your work and staying out of these situations.”
Outside of school, Sonia enjoys skating, eating at food joints like Din Tai Fung, and her part time job at local yoghurt joint Frolick.
“I enjoy working at Frolick because of the flexible hours and free flow of yoghurt. Their plain flavored yoghurt and Oreos is what I usually feed on during work.”
The 18-year-old hopes to be able to focus more on entertainment news in the future because she believes that people are constantly looking for entertainment, so she would always have something to deliver to her listeners.
Her advice others who are interested in pursuing a career in the media, is to make sure they have a huge interest in it before deciding.
She also believes that one should explore all areas of the media when given the opportunity to.
