It is common to see our classmates leaving class early or asking the facilitator for an extension to submit their Reflection Journal. Work would also most likely be their reason. Why, however, in these times where most of us come from middle to high income families, still find the need to work? Plus, why is there the need to work and does it disrupt one’s studies?
Nicholas, who currently studies Supply Chain Management and works at Uniqlo believes that most students find the need to work because their parents cannot support them financially.
“I work because my mother is unable to support me and my sister. I can pay for my phone bills and survive throughout the month. Sometimes I have enough to go shopping too.”
However, he believes that work does not interfere with his studies. “I never had problems when it comes to studying. I try to leave after the 6ps. Also prior to UTs I try not to work as often,” he explains. He also never believes in missing school for work.
Not all who work find their studies not affected. Ashraf, who majors in Communications and Automations Electronics, who used to work while schooling claimed that working made him fall behind with his grades.
“My work schedule was not flexible so there were times where I had to work and miss the 6th Presentation. It was extremely difficult because it made studying for the tests harder. When I failed one of my modules due to my constant absence my facilitator advised that it was best to quit. Besides, I only worked because I wanted to have extra allowance to shop.”.
Facilitators fortunately have always been supportive of students who work while schooling, regardless of their reason. Their advice however is that one should schedule their work timings properly without having to miss the 6th Presentation, which is the most important. Also, if students need help in studying for their tests, they can always seek consultation.
