More Support for the Social Service Sector
Singapore, 12 June, 2012 – The
Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports will be focusing on
improving the social sector service this year through two new plans. The Social
Service Manpower Development Plan, which will be developed over the coming
years, will focus on improving professional capability in the sector.
Productivity levels of the sector will also be raised through its new Social
Sector ICT Master plan.
The Social Service Development Plan plans to attract more
people into the sector by widening its training and offering more scholarships.
Awareness of the sector has been raised through its recent short film campaigns
and will continue to do so through public education and outreach. MCYS will
input S$10 million dollars into its own funding in July this year to improve
its campaigns and outreach. A large part of this will also go to its current workers
in the industry, who will be given a pay increment later in the year. Career
advancement and development opportunities will also be funded to help expand
its Social Service Train Institute.
More information communication technological tools will be
implemented into the sector to help improve its services. Some of these include the use of mobile devices by social
workers who make home visits and conduct off-site programs or to improve information management
and sharing.
Mr. Chan Chun Seng, acting minister of MCYS states that
these changes are to meet the
socio-demographic changes over
the years, where more of these social workers will be ‘“sandwiched” between
caring for our elderly parents and supporting our young children’ if the sector
does not expand.
Amidst these new measures to improve the social sector,
MCYS will also continue its third tranche of the VWOs Charity Capability Fund, which was launched to strengthen the
capabilities of VWOs and to improve social services in Singapore. The
organization will commit S$100 million dollars to the charity over the next
five years.
